@trevortwining We run a Daily Scrum now and the team is asking to find an alternative to daily meetings. We have team members who are in Europe. I'm in California. The company operates on EST.

For our team members from Europe, the daily scrum happens around dinner time. The daily scrum reports become very awkward. They're something like: "I did ..., I won't be doing anything else today, but I will do these things tomorrow. I don't really need anything now, but I might when you go back to sleep."

The Daily Scrum is a technique that comes from Agile. Agile encourages co-location. When co-location is not an option, then other solutions must be attempted.

I tried to do research to find the best practices. I found document that describe best practices, but they all say the same thing: "Distributed teams are complicated and we must be sensitive to needs of individual team members."

You need to be careful that the use of the written form doesn't turn into some sort of management report. You'd be surprised how easily this can happen, even if you're structure isn't really set up that way.

It might work better to find that common time -- even if not ideal -- for you all to do the standup call. The benefits are tangible, immediate, and missed when they're gone.
